The Art of the Initial: How Your Shell Letter is Made

A personalised shell initial begins with a name and a collection of coastal shells. I make each letter by hand in Wollongong, NSW, choosing shells for the way their colour, shape and texture work together. Here is what goes into your keepsake.

1. Choosing the shells

Many of the seashells in my work are personally collected during walks along the Wollongong, Illawarra and South Coast shoreline. I sort and select them carefully, looking at their natural tones, markings and scale. A small shell can add just the right detail to the curve of a letter.

2. Finding your colour palette

The initial collections offer four palettes: creamy white; beige, white and gold; pink, white and gold; and black and white. The beige and pink designs include small gold-coated sea beads. Each palette has a different character, from soft and delicate to warm or striking.

3. Arranging the letter by hand

I place and secure the shells individually, building up texture while keeping the letter easy to recognise. Natural shells vary in shape and colour, so the photographs show the design and palette rather than an identical copy. Your finished piece will have its own gentle differences.

4. Choosing a framed or hanging finish

The framed shell initials are displayed in 27 × 27 × 6 cm glass-fronted shadow box frames. Each includes a keepsake label on the back, ready for your handwritten message.

The hanging shell initials are made on wooden letter bases, approximately 18 cm tall, and designed for a wall or door. They are available in A–Z and an ampersand (&).

Allowing time for handmade

Hanging initials usually require 5–7 business days for creation before dispatch. Framed initials require 7–10 business days. Delivery time is additional, so please check the individual product page and contact Anna before ordering for a particular date.

Whether it is a new baby’s first initial, a birthday gift or a letter for your own home, the care is in the small details.
